I am so very grateful to be a Kansas City Public Schools Success Mentor. Ten years ago, life had come to a crossroads. For years, I believed that I could help change the life of a young person. And then my teen son died.
After that, doubts crept into my head. I thought, I couldn't save the life of my own flesh and blood, how in the world could I affect change upon someone's child. In retrospect, what I learned was to never question the steps that are ordained for you.
Three days after my son was laid to rest, I spoke with a group of 50 teenagers about the importance of education and making responsible choices.
